Signs to double-check regardless of the date: off smell, slimy or sticky texture, discoloration, or visible mold.

This is a general estimate, not food safety advice. When in doubt, throw it out.

How long does food actually last?

Most date labels on food packaging are not safety cutoffs, they are quality estimates set by the manufacturer. "Sell by" is aimed at stores, telling them how long to keep an item on the shelf, and has little to do with when it stops being good to eat at home. "Best by" or "best if used by" is about peak flavor and texture, not safety, food is often perfectly fine to eat after that date. "Use by" is the closest thing to a safety-related date, and matters most for highly perishable items. This calculator estimates a general safe window based on the food type and how it is stored, since storage temperature affects shelf life more than the date printed on the package.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to eat food a few days past the expiration date?

Often, yes, especially for shelf-stable and pantry items, since most date labels are about peak quality rather than safety. For perishables like meat, dairy, and leftovers, use your senses alongside the date, and when in doubt, throw it out.

What is the difference between "sell by" and "use by"?

"Sell by" tells a store how long to display an item and is aimed at inventory, not you. "Use by" or "best by" is the manufacturer's estimate of peak quality. Neither is a strict safety cutoff for most foods, though "use by" on highly perishable items like infant formula should be followed closely.

Does freezing reset the expiration clock?

Freezing pauses spoilage almost entirely, food stays safe indefinitely in a freezer at 0°F (-18°C), though quality can decline over time. The freezer window this calculator shows is about best quality, not a hard safety limit.

How long can leftovers stay in the fridge?

Most cooked leftovers are best eaten within 3 to 4 days in the fridge. After that, the risk of bacterial growth rises even if the food looks and smells fine.
